Wells class, referred to as escort destroyers, are the workhorse in Jovian fleet. While Jovians already had a mid-sized capital ship, such as Wells class, it was decided that it lacked long range capabilities. Thus, Wells class was designed, primarily designed with fleet defense in mind, but they are commonly used on their own in long range patrols.
 
The design is made to be very compact and sturdy, so it ended up as quite heavy for it's size. At the same time, even though it carries only a small crew, living space is very cramped. Crew is placed in central area, just above removable cargo holds, and near life boats. Additionally there are living areas inside gimbaled centrifuge sections, which provide some artificial gravity, helping the crew deal with longer missions. Everything else is mission dedicated.
 
The ship has 4 fusion engines, but usually uses them only in sets of 2, which reduces engine strain, increasing their expected life cycle. Thrusters are standard chemical rockets, using larger numbers of smaller thrusters, to provide higher level of precision in maneuvers.
 
A total of 8 removable cargo holds can be carried, which provides very high provisions for a ship of its size. However, 2 of those are usually traded in for removable internal hangar bays, carrying 2 Novella class crew transport vessels, and 2 Fable class utility vessels.
 
Weaponry primarily consists of large number of short range missiles, giving it great point defense capabilities. Decent number of long range missile silos are also added in, which gives it better anti ship and area defense capabilities. Additionally 2 dual gauss gun turrets are added. Turrets are intentionally placed near liquid droplet radiators, that way they can sink their heat away in a much more effective way, and to add to that, passive radiators are placed along barrels, and active cooling is built in, with capabilities to flush all coolant if situation requires it. With all those factors combined, cannons can produce well sustained fire, which makes Wells class exceedingly dangerous in mid ranges.
 
Main sensors are focused on the front, with lover capability stationary ones spread around the hull. 8 Specially designed targeting stations are also added. Those are designed to track fast moving targets, guide missiles, and can also provide electronic counter measures.
 
Crucial ship sections are quite armored with layered sandwich armor, which adds a decent chunk of weight. Rest of the ship mostly has spaced armor, with explosive reactive armor in some sections.
 
Wells class is probably most commonly seen ship in Jovian fleet. While somewhat disliked for crampedness by their crews, Jovians still use them with pride, as they are a significant step up from previous designs of similar size. Indeed, while not even close to most powerful within Jovian fleet, much less in Solar system, they are still respected for their capabilities, especially for their capacity to work in conjunction with other ships.
